Inputs in Theta

inputs in theta

everything in cycles, feeding into each other and back out

oscillations of waves - inputs and outputs

within theta waves is a gateway to the subconscious - pulling memories and associations, daydreams, deep meditative states, hypnagogic visions

simultaneously the perfect time to inject thoughts and ideas into the subconscious

a gateway: input, output

stimuli - physical, visual, emotional

fed into the mind, coming to fruition as abstracted outputs, flowing visions, amalgamated by what the subconscious clings to

for better or for worse — mostly for better.

these then curated by the self in various manifestations of reality

in this case, shared with AI

creating an output visually shareable

now seen

and input again into new eyes

oscillating now within your brainwaves.

Created for the DAMzine residency, this artwork draws inspiration from hypnagogic visions, resulting from the amalgamation of sensory stimuli as inputs: me being enveloped in this idea of brainwaves as the art prompt, reflecting on the rhythmic waves and dendritic patterns of both the mind and nature - flowing of energy, and doting upon the flowers blooming outside.

Exploring the parallels between human and AI processes—inputs versus outputs—with this project, I aimed to experiment with AI as a tool within my artistic practice. To create this piece, I trained an AI on a large collection of my abstract digital artwork. I then selected one of the AI-generated images, influenced by its training on my work. I chose one of the outputs that aligned with this upward sweeping motion that I was envisioning — a flow that mirrors the oscillating patterns of brainwaves, particularly theta waves associated with subconscious thought and hypnagogic states. Additionally, I utilized an interactive sketch and word prompt program to generate imagery that I blended into the initial AI image — flowers and flowing water patterns. Finally, I painted into the image with repetition and mosh brushes to create the final piece.

This artwork is both a personal reflection and a visual exploration of brainwaves in motion—an exploration of the cyclical nature and continuity of thoughts and ideas: inputs and outputs, from human to human, human to machine, machine to human. It highlights how seemingly small, everyday influences can shape what we see and how we behave, just as a single word or brushstroke can transform the output of an AI. These small things all adding up to alter our interpretation of the world.
